ASEAN Civil Society to Hold First Hearing on CSR

By Altsean-Burma, Forum-Asia and IESR  •  April 29, 2011

Southeast Asia civil society’s first public hearing on Corporate Social Responsibility and ASEAN will be held in Jakarta on Monday, May 2, from 10am-4pm. The venue is the Yayasan Lembaga Bantuan Hukum Indonesia (YLBHI) office, Jl. Diponegoro No. 74, Jakarta Pusat.

The hearing will consist of presentations from ASEAN civil society, testimonies from affected communities, and preliminary conclusions and recommendations from a panel of experts.

The theme is consistent with the proposed thematic studies of the ASEAN Inter-Governmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR). The hearing will bring forward the voices of affected communities and regional civil society, and in doing so, deepen and complement the work of AICHR.

The public hearing will highlight some aspects that may not be officially covered by AICHR, including specific case studies that have far- reaching consequences on communities’ civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, as well as the environment. The testimonies are expected to focus on the agriculture, manufacturing and energy sectors, as well as extractive industries, i.e. mining, oil and gas.

The testimonies, backed up with visual resources, will be the human stories which emphasize the necessity and urgency of ensuring that corporate and governmental stakeholders engaged in economic activities are compliant with
international and regional laws and standards.

The event has been organized by a range of regional networks and organisations including the SAPA Task Force on ASEAN and Burma, SAPA Task Force on ASEAN and Human Rights , SAPA Task Force on ASEAN Migrant Worker, SAPA Task Force on Extractive Industry , SAPA Task Force on Freedom of Information , SAPA Working Group on ASEAN , SAPA Working Group on Environment , Altsean-Burma, Asia Indigenous People Pact , Burma Partnership, FORUM-ASIA , IESR, JATAM , KontraS , Migrant Forum in Asia , SEACA , TERRA, WALHI and YLBHI.
