Donate this Holiday Season

By Burma Partnership  •  December 17, 2010

With the holiday season directly before us, those wishing to support the amazing work of Burma’s human rights and relief organizations might consider the groups below.

Happy holidays from all of us at Burma Partnership.

Cyclone Giri Christmas Appeal for Burma

Christmas is a time when families reunite, to share meals together and enjoy their holiday.

But in Burma, many families have lost their homes and livelihoods because of Cyclone Giri. On October 22, 2010, Cyclone Giri hit Arakan (Rakhine) State in Western Burma. More than 20,000 homes were completely destroyed, affecting over 260,000 people.

Cyclone Giri survivors are still urgently in need of clean water, food and shelter. The UN has estimated that almost US$53 million of aid is needed. So far, only US$18 million has been pledged by international donors.

The Giri Relief Committee is a group of organizations and individuals based in Arakan State and on the Thai-Burma border. We came together after the cyclone to support the efforts of local people who are delivering aid to the affected families.

In this season of giving, we urge you to remember those families in Burma who have lost everything. Help us to help them rebuild their lives.

Please give generously!

Support KHRG This Holiday Season

This holiday season, the Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG) asks you to consider making a donation to support villagers in eastern Burma in their struggle to claim their human rights. We also accept donations made on behalf of friends, colleagues, or loved ones. To show our appreciation for donations received during the holidays, KHRG will send our supporters personalized thank-you notes and gifts.

KHRG is a small organisation with a finite budget, but we are always looking to do more to support villagers’ efforts to claim human rights for their families and communities. Donations from individuals or small groups are therefore always needed and warmly appreciated, regardless of size.

KHRG’s field team works directly with villagers in eastern Burma to document their testimonies about human rights abuses and conduct workshops to share across communities the locally-developed strategies villagers use to claim their human rights, preserve their livelihoods and avoid human rights abuses with dignity. All donations received by KHRG go directly towards supporting the activities of the brave men and women who carry out our field research and work with villagers to strengthen local efforts to claim their human rights. Click here to see examples of how KHRG can use your donation to support villagers and our field team.

Donate to the Mae Tao Clinic’s Emergency Humanitarian Relief

In addition to providing crucial health care services to refugees, migrant workers and other individuals who cross the border from Burma to Thailand, Dr. Cynthia Maung’s Mae Tao Clinic (MTC) is also providing humanitarian assistance to those fleeing ongoing armed conflict in Eastern Burma that broke out following the November elections. With clashes occurring nearly every day, people continue to flee across the border and are in need of assistance and protection. Learn more about the clinic here and how you can donate here.
