Nationality Verification deadline extended

By Burma Partnership  •  March 1, 2010

According to internal documents, the Thai government has extended the deadline for migrant workers to submit their completed Nationality Verification application from the original 28 February deadline until 31 March. Migrant workers have been given until 2 March to register at local employment departments and sign an agreement to complete the process. Any migrant workers who have not showed their intention to go through the process will not have their work permits renewed, and will be subject to arrest and deportation. There remain a lot of uncertainties about the process, and for many, it is too expensive. Migrant workers from Burma are also worried about their safety if they return to Burma to complete the process, and about the security of their family members who remain inside the country.
